Why you should avoid like the plague tape fiberglass drywall!
Sunday, February 28th, 2010The truth is that the fiberglass tape has its place, but – please! not on your drywall seams.
Yes, I think it is controversial. And I have my (good) reasons.
In fact, people who use the tape fiberglass instead of paper drywall tape to help me live.
As a drywall finishing and repair of a specialist in plaster, I have thousands of dollars over the years to repair the seams with drywall tape fiberglass. Thank you, guys.
Whathappened? Drywall seams are a band rigid closed. Especially at the joints butt seam, the tape fiberglass is easy to move a bit 'on the road after the race, and Presto! developed a crack right in the middle of the town.
The tape is not broken. It's just mud coat drywall is not close enough – enough – to add the strength necessary to ensure continuous communication.
How do I know? Well, I noticed a little 'the drywall long time even deeper joints glued. With these seams, the mud is thick coat, because it is the valley where the beveled edges filled drywall come together. The resultant extra strength.
I understand the fascination of fiberglass tape. Relax at the crack and the mud 'er up bubbles, etc. so easy and convenient, especially for beginners cone. And all do-it-yourself site and newspaper articles encouraging.
Yes, it isdifficult to learn to properly use the card. For newcomers to the taping drywall, there are questions on mud evenly, dried left the band to avoid dents in butt joints, and so forth.
These skills can be learned, but, and pay big dividends when the job is finished and painted. Nothing is more annoying for the client's life in his new home in / out, when cracks in the development of its new walls and ceilings to be seen.
As I said earlier, there is a placefiberglass tape. First, the choice band to the seams in drywall plaster veneer. It is what it was designed, first and foremost. It works very well in this setting, because the plaster veneer is much harder and harder compound dry wall.
But there is a place that can help fiberglass tape in the trade of drywall, and that the repair is the end of the year. Around doors and windows, cracks in drywall are common. Little movement 'moredesign and do not get this ugly error.
If I fix those cracks, I want more guarantees. What I do is to use small pieces of glass fiber tape – maybe three inches or so – and the other in a bed of clay ACROSS the crack and parallel. I wipe the excess sludge
me with the tape.
When this first layer of tape is difficult, so I put the tape fiber glass and centeredunderlying crack. Now I have double insurance: the glass to force the paper to be attached to the surface. That normally care for cracks or fissures which are particularly worried. (Do not forget the two or more layers of toppings.)
I have the same operation, or a variant of the same tears over bad plaster.
One last point. The toughness of the link has been emphasized. For this reason, I like "hot mud", a compound type setting more common, such as chalk,Strength.
If you and your speed is not certain that would be called good for mud with a longer time setting as one hour or 90 minutes. Mix small batches and do not forget your tools and pans and cleaning between batches.
There. It was not so bad, right?
